Box Score Schenectady, N.Y. - Castleton dropped their third consecutive non-conference game on Monday evening when they fell 3-1 to Union College. The loss drops the Spartans to 10-5-0 on the season.
The shot totals and corner kicks were relatively even, with Union holding slight edges in both categories. The key downfall for the Spartans was their inability to finish off the play and put the ball in the net.
The Dutchwomen jumped out to an early lead when Breana Derella scored her third goal of the year in the 16th minute of play. The forward received a ball from Julia Shively on the left side of the box and buried it to put the home team up 1-0. In the second half, Derella struck again to extend the Union lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute.
The Spartans were able to cut the lead in half when Dominique Valancius scored her 13th goal of the season. The freshman beat a defender on a long sprint and ripped a low shot to the far post, beating Union goalkeeper Allison Brustowicz to make the csore 2-1.
In the 77th, Union drove the nail into the game with a third goal. Whitney Bickford ripped her first goal of the season off a pass from Mollie Gillchrist to put the Dutchwomen up 3-1 and seal the Spartans' fate.
Jessica Binkowski made five saves in net for the Spatans, taking her fifth loss of the season. Brustowicz turned away seven Spartan shots in the win. With a 10-5 record, Castleton will face Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, Oct. 19 at home.
