2/4/2012 12:00:00 AM

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - Junior Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, B.C.) came through with some late-game heroics to propel Castleton to a 2-1 overtime victory over Nichols College on Saturday afternoon in ECAC East action.

Just 17 seconds into the extra session, Nichols was charged with a delay of game penalty as a player tried to cover the puck in the crease. Castleton was awarded a penalty shot and Werger came through with her sixth game-winning goal of the season and her 11th overall.

With the victory, the Spartans improve to 7-12-1 and tie the program record for victories in a season, set back during the 2005-06 campaign. Castleton also moves to 6-7-1 in ECAC East play while Nichols drops to 6-14-1 overall and 3-10-1 in conference action.

The Bison got on the board first, as Talia Hohmann (Marina, Calif.) scored a short-handed goal 10:55 into the first period off a feed from Alyssa Bufis (Linden, N.J.).

Castleton responded at the 15:50 of the first as Molly Howard (Shelburne, Vt.) scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Meagan Hulbert (Barre, Vt.).

The game remained scoreless for the next two periods and 17 seconds into overtime when Werger broke the deadlock with the penalty shot.

Junior Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.) started the game in the net for the Spartans and made 22 saves before leaving five minutes into the final period. Freshman Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) came on in relief and made eight saves over the final 15 minutes of the third and into overtime. Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 26 stops for Nichols between the pipes.

Castleton returns home on Friday when the take hosts Southern Maine at 4 p.m. in Spartan Arena.
