How It Happened
It took just two minutes for
Ellie Schliebener to open the scoring for the Spartans, sending socks and cold-weather gear raining down onto the ice surface at Spartan Arena. The captain finished the play after a feed from
Annika Nelson at the blue line, with
Eva Hofmeister also assisting along the boards.
Morrisville responded at the 16:16 mark of the opening period, evening the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
After much of the second stanza had passed, Castleton regained the lead when Schliebener netted her second goal of the night on the power play at 17:45.
Olivia Carter and
Maysa Ford picked up the assists, giving the Spartans a 2-1 advantage.
Early in the final period,
Rainey Lay was assessed a cross-checking penalty, but the Spartans responded in highlight fashion.
Moa Carlsson intercepted a Mustang pass in the defensive zone and sent the puck ahead to
Meg Aiken, who streaked down the ice and buried a short-handed goal at the 3:44 mark to make it 3-1.
The visitors answered three minutes later to pull within one. Morrisville pulled its netminder in the final minute, but the extra attacker could not find the equalizer as Castleton held on for the 3-2 victory.
