How It Happened
The opening period saw both teams feeling each other out, skating to a scoreless first 20 minutes.
Castleton broke through late in the second, taking advantage of a delayed tripping call. At 4:01,
Brooke Noble buried a feed from
Mikayla Brightman, who had muscled the puck free behind the net before finding Noble alone in front. The Spartans carried their 1–0 edge into the second intermission.
UMass Boston evened the score at 8:33 of the third period, but Castleton responded with its second power-play tally of the season. At 12:14,
Amanda Vaughn redirected a shot from Brightman to restore the lead, with
Morgan Arscott earning the secondary assist after working the puck free along the goal line.
The Beacons struck again with under five minutes remaining to make it 2–2. Castleton was forced to kill a tripping penalty assessed at 19:13, but the Spartans held UMB without a shot to push the game to overtime, beginning 4-on-3.
Castleton's penalty kill continued its strong effort into the extra frame, shutting down the remainder of the disadvantage. However, UMass Boston broke through moments later, scoring at 1:58 of OT to seal the 3–2 win.
