Todd Nets 100th Win as Spartans Beat Southern Maine 7-3

Gorham, Maine – The Castleton men's hockey team scored four straight goals between the second and third periods to open the season with a 7-3 victory over Southern Maine on Friday evening. 

The win marked the 100th career victory for head coach Alex Todd, and also the 100th win for the Castleton program as a whole. The team has now won three straight season openers.

Junior Ryan Delorme (Kanata, Ont.) scored two power-play goals, senior Josh Harris (Torrance, Calif.) added a goal and two assists, and Dan Bell (Victoria, B.C.) chipped in with three assists as 12 players recorded a point on the evening. 

Delorme scored 5:18 into the contest, and just nine seconds into Castleton's first penalty attempt of the evening off assists from Kevin Van Dyk (Grand Valley, Ont.) and Bell. The Huskies scored just 57 seconds late to knot the game at one. 

In the second period, Harris netted his lone goal at the 8:05 mark to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Southern Maine responded at 14:19 to even the game at two goals apiece. The Spartans countered less than three minutes later on Delorme's second power-play goal. 

Castleton pushed its lead to 4-2 just 1:12 into the third period on a goal by sophomore Brian Greene (Falmouth, Maine), which was assisted by Harris. Junior Nick Lazorko (Rockwall, Texas) made it 5-2 at the 4:36 mark off assists from Harris and Greene. 

Freshman Charles Bando (Wakefield, Mass.) got in on the action at 16:29 with his first career goal. Southern Maine scored just 27 seconds later, but Justin Alonzo (San Jose, Calif.) finished off the scoring with 21 seconds remaining for the four-goal victory. 

Sophomore Thomas Shelley (Waterford, Ont.) finished with 22 saves between the pipes to earn the win. His counterpart, Patrick Farrington made 17 stops. 

Castleton returns to the ice on Saturday when the team travels to face the University of New England at 4 p.m.
