Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton scored three times in each half and controlled play throughout the contest on the way to a 6-0 victory overThomas on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
Senior Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.) had her best game of the season, earning her first career hat trick and dishing off an assist for seven total points. Freshman Emily Osmer (Wallingford, Vt.) added a goal and an assist in the game.
The Spartans wasted little time in getting on the board, scoring just 1:29 into the contest. Senior Kelsey Garceau (St. Albans, Vt.) received a pass from Jessica Phillips (Drewsville, N.H.) just inside the 18 and ripped a shot into the far corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 14th minute, sophomore Jenna Bostwick (Pembroke, Mass.) pushed the Castleton lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick after a foul in the box against Mallory Costello (Vernon, N.J.).
Senior Ethier made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute off an assist from Lucia Sforza (Walcott, Vt.). The senior collected the ball in the middle of the 18 and rifled a shot past Kate Thidodeau (Woolwich, Maine).
In the first ten minutes of the second half, Ethier and freshman Emily Osmer (Wallingford, Vt.) connected for a pair of goals to push the advantage to 5-0. In the 53rd minute, Osmer found Ethier inside the box and she ripped one home. One minute later, Ethier returned the favor and Osmer chipped the ball from the 18 over a charging Thidodeau and into the back of the net.
Ethier concluded the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 75th minute.
Castleton outshot Thomas 45-4 on the afternoon, including a 24-1 margin in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Sarah Shilstone (Deer Park, N.Y.) was forced to make three saves for the shutout. Thidodeau finished with 16 stops between the pipes for the Terriers.
Thomas falls to 3-9 and 1-5 in the North Atlantic Conference with the loss while the Spartans improve to 9-3-1 and a perfect 5-0 in the NAC.
The victory was also the 99th career win for head coach Chris Chapdelaine, putting him one shy of becoming the first Castleton women's soccer coach with 100 victories.
