Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – No. 2 Castleton used a pair of second-half goals to take down seventh-seeded Johnson St. 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal matchup at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans dominated play throughout, keeping the Badgers without a shot in the first half and finishing with a 46-2 shot advantage. Castleton improves to 13-4-1 with the victory while Johnson St. ends its season with a 6-9-2 mark.
Neither team was able to break through in the first half despite multiple opportunities by the Spartans. Castleton finished with 24 shots compared to zero for the Badgers in the opening 45 minutes, forcing Johnson St. keeper Katja Langmaind (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) to make six saves.
In the second half, the Spartans had back-to-back corner kicks in the opening three minutes, but Langmaid and the defense were able to deflect the ball out of harms way.
Castleton finally broke through in the 52nd minute off a throw-in by Jenna Bostwick (Pembroke, Mass.). Bostwick whipped the ball into the box and it bounced once on the near side of the six before Kelsey Garceau (St. Albans, Vt.) was able to get her foot on it. She took a touch to her left, and with a defender draped on her right, put a shot past Langmaid into the far corner of the net.
Garceau made it 2-0 ten minutes later. Freshman Mallory Costello (Vernon, N.J.) took the ball into the box on the far side of the field before delivering a cross back to the middle of the 18. The charging Garceau one-timed the ball into the upper far corner of the net, past the outstretched Langmaid.
Langmaid finished the day with 12 saves in net for Johnson St. while Kaleigh Newton (Morrisville, Vt.) didn't have to make a save in earning her fourth shutout of the season.
Castleton returns to action on Wednesday when the team will host a NAC Semifinal game against either Husson or Maine Maritime Academy.
