Spartans Roll past Johnson St.

JOHNSON, Vt. – Castleton scored four second-half goals to run away with a 6-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's soccer victory on Thursday at Minaert Field.  The Badgers fall to 6-7-1, 2-4-2 NAC while the Spartans move to 12-3-1 and remain undefeated in league play at 8-0.

 
Senior Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored both of her goals in the second half and classmate Kelsey Garceau (St. Albans, Vt.) added a goal and an assist to help lead the Castleton charge.  Sophomore Jenna Bostwick (Pembroke, Mass.) and freshmen Mallory Costello (Vernon, N.J.) and Sami Ritter (Wantage, N.J.) each scored a goal while rookies Kim French (White River Jct., Vt.), Jenna Morrissey (Milton, Vt.) and Jessica Phillips (Drewsville, N.H.) all recorded assists.
 
Johnson keeper Katja Langmaid (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) made several outstanding saves on the day on her way to 10 for game while counterpart Kaleigh Newton (Morrisville, Vt.) recorded one save for the shutout victory.
 
Ritter would score the game's first goal 8:52 into the match and Costello would make it 2-0 with just over 15 minutes left in the first half. The score would remain 2-0 into halftime.
 
The match stayed competitive until Garceau netted her goal with just under 23 minutes left in the match.  That score opened the flood gates, as the Spartans were able to tally three more times in the final eight minutes.
 
Castleton controlled play with a commanding 23-3 advantage in shots for match while tallying four corner kicks to Johnson's one.
 
Castleton returns home for its final regular season game of the year, hosting Colby-Sawyer College at 4:00 pm as part of a soccer doubleheader at Spartan Stadium on Tuesday, October 23.
