Spartans Cruise into NAC Semifinal

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans team made quick work of Thomas in their North Atlantic Conference quarterfinals matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Stadium, scoring six unanswered goals and finishing with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Terriers.

Senior Hilary Cooke continued her recent scoring binge with two goals and an assist and sophomore Kelsey Lenney (Coxsackie, N.Y.) added the first multi-goal game of her career as Castleton out-shot Thomas by an impressive 47-6 margin to advance to the NAC semifinal for the fourth straight season.

The Spartans looked ready to capitalize early, putting multiple shots on goal in the first five minutes. However, it was the Terriers who struck first, scoring in the 10th minute. Freshman Kristi Hilton (Monmouth, Maine) took the ball down the right sideline and just wide of the 18 she lofted a cross to the middle of the six for Terissa Ridge (Rumford, Maine), who headed the ball home for her second goal of the season.

Thomas' 1-0 lead didn't last long as senior Courtney Chadburn (No. Clarendon, Vt.) responded with a header past a diving Kate Tibodeau (Woolwich, Maine) to the tie the score up at one apiece 15:56 into the contest.

In the 29th minute, Castleton took its first lead of the game. Cooke found Jenna Bostwick (Pembroke, Mass.) just inside the 18 and the freshman made a quick move before firing a ball which curled around the left goal post and in past the Tibodeau.

Cooke added her first goal of the game at the 40:21 mark, finishing a rebound off a blocked shot by Maria Arnot (Milford, N.Y.) from inside the six.

Lenney put the finishing touches on the first-half scoring with just 1:37 left, heading in her third goal of the season after consecutive headers by Bostwick and Cooke in front of the net.

The Spartans offense continued to click in the second half as Lenney headed another ball into the back of the net at the 47:31 mark. The goal followed a header by Arnot and came directly off a Chadburn corner kick.

In the 50th minute, Cooke put home her second goal of the game and 18th of the season for the 6-1 Castleton advantage. The forward scored off a pass from Sophomore Kelsey Garceau (St. Albans, Vt.) right inside the six.

Junior Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) played 70:58 minutes and wasn't forced to make a save in earning her 10th win of the season. Freshman Katja Langmaid (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) played the final 19:02 and made one save. Tibodeau made 15 saves for the Terriers in net as they end their season with a 3-14 record.

The Spartans improve to 15-4 and advance to the NAC semifinals on Tuesday against fifth-seeded New England College, who beat Lyndon St. 3-1 on Saturday.
