Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. - Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, Vt.) and Megan Blongy (Rutland, Vt) each scored a pair of goals to lead Castleton State College to a 7-0 win over Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
Castleton (5-2, 1-0 NAC) scored five goals in the opening half and settled in for the win. Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, Conn.) broke a scoreless tie just one minute and nine seconds into the contest, heading home a Meryssa Wacholder (East Greenbush, N.Y.) assist.
Chadburn scored the next two goals in succession, the first of which came on a penalty kick in the 19th minute, and the second came unassisted four minutes later. In the 41st minute Blongy made it 4-0, taking a short pass off a corner kick from Hannah Josselyn (Ludlow, Vt.) and firing a rocket inside the far post. Josselyn rounded out the first half scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 43rd minute, slipping home a low drive inside the far post.
Blongy tacked one on in the second half, and Brandy White (Springfield, Vt.) finished off the Spartan scoring.
Castleton controlled play throughout, holding a 36-3 edge in shots and a 12-2 margin in corner kicks.
Thomas (1-5, 0-1 NAC) received an eight-save performance from starting goalie Alyssa Vitalone (Bingham, Maine). Kate Thibodeau (Woolwich, Maine) turned away three second half shots, including a diving save on a Brynn Campbell (Clarendon, Vt.) attempt from point blank range.
Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.) stopped the only shot that came her way in 60 minutes of action, before giving way to Meghan Scott (Vergennes, Vt.) who went untested over the final 30 minutes.
Both teams return to conference play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. with the Spartans playing host to University of Maine-Farmington and Thomas traveling to Green Mountain.
