Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Monks' goaltender Meaghan Johnson (Portland, Maine) made 20 saves in the cage while St. Joseph's (Me.) used three different goal scorers to defeat the Castleton State College field hockey team, 3-2, in North Atlantic Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
The Monks improve to 6-2 overall and remain perfect in NAC play with a 3-0 record. The Spartans fall to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the NAC.
St. Joseph's (Me.) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 12:35 of the first half as Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, Maine) notched her fourth goal of the season beating Castleton goaltender Siobhan Whittemore (Springfield, Vt.).
Whittemore ended the afternoon stopping 16 shots in the cage.
Freshman Rachel Preusser (Craryville, N.Y.) tied the contest up at 1-1 scoring her ninth marker of the season (unassisted) at 20:20.
Sarah Bartell (Exeter, N.H.) helped the Monks retake the lead at 29:11 with her fourth goal of the season (unassisted).
In the second half, Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H.) scored the eventual game-winning goal with her third tally of the season at 42:09 making it 3-1.
Castleton's Kealy Chipman (Bellows Falls, Vt.) cut into the deficit at 3-2 scoring her seventh goal of the season at 58:24.
The Spartans won the penalty corners match-up, 24-6, and outshot St. Joseph's (Me.) 27-22.
Castleton returns to action on Saturday, October 9 at Spartan Stadium against Lasell in NAC action at 6:00 p.m.
