Castleton downs Maine Maritime 18-5 in conference action

Fort Ann, NY-Michael Martinez scored four goals to lead Castleton State College to an 18-5 win over Maine Maritime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at the Golden Goal Tournament Park in Fort Ann, NY.

Castleton trailed 2-0 after he first period as Nate Bolduc and Troy Murphy gave the Mariners the early lead.

Martinez opened the scoring for Castleton six seconds into the second period, only to have Murphy answer to give the Mariners a 3-1 lead.

It was all Castleton after that, however as the Spartans unleashed 10 unanswered goals before Maine Maritime tallied to end the third period to cut the lead to 11-4 entering the final period

Korey Counos also had a big offensive day for the 5-4 Spartans, scoring a pair of goals and handing out three assists. Daniel Luzzi added two goals and two assists, while Craig MacDerment chipped in two goals and was 18-for-24 on face-offs.

Michael Mamunes stopped seven shots in relief of starter, Christopher Wynne to earn the victory.

Castleton returns to conference action against Johnson State on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
