Castleton splits North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with U. Maine-Farmington

Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College softball team split a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the University of Maine at Farmington, losing the opener 13-3 in a mercy-rule shortened five inning game, and taking the night cap 7-6 in walk-off fashion.

Game One: Megan Goodrow was 3-for-3 with a walk and two homeruns as Maine-Farmington earned the mercy-rule win in five innings. Goodrow smacked a three-run homerun in the third and a two-run homerun in the fourth as the Beavers plated four runs in each of the final three innings.

Castleton tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Cassie Koehne singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error. The Spartans allowed four unearned runs to score in the top of the third, three of which came on Goodrow's first blast over the left-centerfield fence. Castleton came back with a single run in the bottom of the inning as Tosha Whittemore provided an rbi-single that scored Laura Rogers who had also reached by way of a single. The Spartans added another unearned run in the fifth but it was not enough combat Goodrow and a Beaver offense that pounded out 14 hits.

Kelly McDonough was 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Lauren Overlock, Sarah Defilipp and McKell Barnes each had two hits for the Beavers. Defilipp went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs, all unearned on six hits, while striking out four.

Whittemore added a pair of hits and two RBI for Castleton. Angie Carpenter took the loss, allowing all 13 runs (seven earned) on 14 hits and two walks while striking out four.

Game Two: Castleton plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off with the win and salvage the doubleheader split.

The Spartans held a 5-4 advantage heading into the top of the seventh inning, but a lead-off homerun by McKell Barnes tied the score at 5-5. Megan Goodrow followed with a double to left-centerfield, and after being sacrificed to third base, scored on Kasey McPhail's rbi-groundout to take the one-run lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hilary Bemis hit a one-out rocket to centerfield that missed going over the fence by inches and had to settle for a triple. Allison Lamay followed with an rbi-single to tie the game at 6-6. Alicia Zraunig singled to right, and after an error put runners at second and third with one out, Sarah Flore hit an rbi-ground out to give Castleton the win.

Goodrow was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored to lead the 16-6 (10-4 NAC) Beavers. McPhail and Barnes each added a pair of hits and one RBI.

Zraunig led the Spartans, going 3-for-4 including her first collegiate homerun, a two-run shot to leftfield that gave Caslteton an early 2-0 lead. Lamay was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Bemis added a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Tosha Whittemore picked up the win in relief of starter Laura Rogers. Rogers went the first five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits, while striking out two. Whittemore pitched two innings, allowing two earned on two hits.

Maine-Farmington will travel to Johnson State College for a NAC doubleheader Firday afternoon.

Castleton is on the road this weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at Becker, and a Sunday twin-bill at Elms.
