Worcester, MA-Freshman Marie VanDerKar scored a game-high five goals to lead Castleton State College to a 12-5 road victory over Worcester State in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action. VanDerkar added a pair of assists in the victory for a career-high seven points.
The Spartans raced out to a 7-0 lead over the the first 25 minutes of action. Aimee Goulette, Nicole Bouchard and VanDerKar each posted two first half goals while sophomore Stephanie Pearce scored one goal in the frame for the visitors. Worcester State's Shannon Feeley and Megan Rosborough added late first half scores to keep the Lancers within striking distance at the break.
Worcester State tallied the first two goals of the second half to cut the deficit to three, but it was as close as they would come, as Castleton scored five out of the last six goals to take the win.
Bouchard followed VanDerKar in the scoring column with four goals and one assist, upping her season totals to 14 and five respectively.
The loss was Worcester State's first on the season as the Lancers fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the NEWLA. Castleton evens up at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Lindsey Nunes stopped eight shots in the loss, while Meredith Pope saved 10 in the win.
Worcester State will look to get back in the win column on Thursday when they host Elms College in a NEWLA match. Castleton State will visit Ramapo in non-conference action on Thursday.
