Box Score Colchester, VT - Castleton bounced back and won for the fourth time in five games, defeating St. Michael's 16-2 in non-league action.
For the Spartans, freshman Travis Bass (West Hartford, Conn.) singled, had a three-run triple, and scored twice. Classmate Jon Handy (South Burlington, Vt.) added three singles and a double, scoring three runs, while senior Phil Puleo (Utica, N.Y.) and sophomore Kyle Brooks (Charlotte, Vt.) each singled twice. Freshman Ken Cook (Chester, Vt.) earned the victory on the mound, allowing two runs and three hits in five innings.
For Saint Michael's (7-14), junior Kyle Gingras (Pittsfield, N.H./Pittsfield) singled twice and had an RBI triple, while classmate Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) had a double, two singles, and a run scored. Sophomore Sean Naughton (Goffstown, N.H./Kents Hill School) suffered the loss in his first pitching appearance of the season.
Castleton opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning. The Purple Knights pulled to within 3-1 on Gingras's two-out triple in the bottom of the second inning, but the Spartans broke the game open with a five-run third inning, scoring all of their runs with two outs and chasing Naughton. Castleton added a pair of runs in the fourth inning, two more in the sixth inning, and sealed the win with a four-run ninth inning.
