Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion at the bottom of the ninth, 7-6, to Springfield College on Tuesday.

How it Happened:
Springfield put one run on the board at the bottom of the third off a single through the right side as they took a 1-0 lead. Castleton took the lead in the following inning, which started with a single from
Justin Strozyk, while
Trey LaVigne followed up with a walk.
Tommie Shaw doubled down the left field line to bring Strozyk home, while
Carter Dickinson followed with a single through the left side as Shaw moved to third and LaVigne crossed home plate for a 2-1 Spartan lead.
The Pride came back at the bottom of the fourth with a tying run off a wild pitch and then jumped out to a 4-2 lead two batters later with a single up the middle to bring in two runs. Springfield added one more run off a home run at the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
Castleton tacked on its third run at the top of the seventh as
Alex McClelland singled to center field to pull in Jack Humback from second to cut the lead to two (5-3). At the top of the eighth with two runners on, Humbach sent a single to left field, tying the game at five as two runs came home.
The Spartans took a 6-5 lead at the top of the ninth as Shaw sent a single to right field to bring in McClelland as the Pride took their turn at the plate. Springfield sent a double to right-center field, allowing the go-ahead run to cross, plus one more as they took the 7-6 win.
Top Performers:
- McClelland, Shaw, Dickinson, and Humbach all posted two hits each, while Shaw and Humbach led with two RBIs each.
- Kevin Hewlett threw two strikeouts through two innings on the mound.
