Castleton drops season opener 9-0 to St. Anselm

Manchester, NH-Castleton fell in their season opener to St. Anselm College 9-0. Hawk Freshman Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) made an early statement in her career with four goals in her first collegiate game and by earning the game's first star.

Kathleen Twomey (Londonderry, N.H.) started the game's scoring with a tally just 25 seconds into the contest. Rigano struck for the next two goals, and they came on the same shift just 31 seconds apart. A goal by Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.) closed out the first period scoring for the Hawks as they took a 4-0 lead into the intermission.

Saint Anselm would score twice more in the second period. Brittany Kretzman (Edina, Minn) finished one less than three minutes into the frame to extend the Hawks lead. Rigano completed her hat trick with a goal just before the game's halfway mark.

Rigano also tallied a power-play goal in the first minute of the third as the Hawks extended their lead to 7-0. Twomey added her second of the contest at the 5:26 mark of the third period before Liezl McLean-Shinaman (Tarriffville, Conn.) added her first goal of the season to close the game's scoring.

Andrea Berlin (Durham, N.H.) earned the shutout for the Hawks with an eight-save effort. Vanessa Carter was in goal for the Spartans and stopped 63 of the 72 shots she faced.

Twomey finished the game with two goals and an assist, while Johnson had a goal and three assists and McLean-Shinaman contributed a goal and an assist.

The Hawks are back in action on Saturday as they meet St. Michael's for a 3:00 p.m. faceoff at Sullivan Arena. Castleton is also back on the ice Saturday at New England College at 3:00 p.m.
