CASTLETON, Vt.- The Vermont State University Castleton women's volleyball team defeated the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers in straight sets Wednesday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-18, 25-7, and 25-14.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 6-4.
Cobleskill got out to an 8-4 lead early, before Castleton reversed course and took a brief 10-9 lead. The Fighting Tigers stayed in it, holding a 17-16 lead before the Spartans closed out the set by going on a 9-1 run. Jocelyn Ray (Essex, Vt.) had four kills in the set.
Castleton continued their dominance into the third set, scoring the first seven points. They would go on to win the set 25-7, which tied the largest set margin of victory of the season so far.
Cobleskill scored the first three points in the third set, but the lead did not last. Castleton turned it around to take an 8-6 lead before stretching the lead out for good with a 7-0 run. Marley Hill (Austin, Texas), posted three consecutive kills during the run and five for the set. The Spartans were able to win the set comfortably by 11.
For the game, Hill led the way offensively with 10 kills. Madison Sheehan (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Ray recorded eight and six kills respectively, each without an error. Alondra Rojas recorded 26 assists and was two kills and two digs shy of a triple double. Defensively, Nicolette Vaughn (Plainfield, Ill.) had 21 digs, which is her most in a three-set match this season.
Castleton also posted their highest hitting percentage in a single match this season at .309.
Up next, the Spartans resume LEC play at Eastern Connecticut State this Friday. First serve is set for 6 pm.
