CASTLETON, VT- The Vermont State Castleton field hockey team hosted undefeated Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium. The Spartans rallied from a 5-2 deficit to score four unanswered goals, including the overtime winner, to defeat the Chargers 6-5.

How It Happened
Castleton struck first in the opening period. The Spartans were granted a penalty corner at 5:55. 46 seconds later, Ava LaRoss (Westminster, VT./Bellows Falls Union) put one into the back of the cage to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead. The Chargers would tie the contest at 1-1 with a goal less than five minutes later.
In the second quarter, the Chargers had a trio of penalty corners in a two-and-a-half-minute span. After the third corner, Brooke Farquar scored to put the visitors ahead 2-1. The Spartans had a pair of shots on frame turned away as Colby-Sawyer led 2-1 at halftime.
Castleton scored the equalizer over a minute and a half into the third quarter on a LaRoss pass to Allison Friel (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area HS). Farquar scored again for Colby-Sawyer at 38:38 and at 39:29 to give the Chargers a 4-2 lead. Colby-Sawyer moved ahead 5-2 in the 43rd minute. Castleton applied pressure in the final 2:22 of the quarter as it got off three shots.
Colby-Sawyer had a shot on goal less than three minutes into the fourth quarter that Spartan goalkeeper Isabella Cosden (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area HS) turned away. The Spartans had three straight penalty corners with no luck. At 52:43, Brooke Noble (Mississauga, Ontario/Clarkson Secondary School) fired a penalty corner that found the stick of Peyton Richardson (Windsor, Vt./Windsor) and she fired a shot into the cage to make it 5-3. Following another penalty corner just over a minute later, Richardson scored again to bring Casleton to within one of trying the game. The Spartans would get that tying goal at 55:45 as Friel scored again off an assist by Richardson. The Spartan defense prevented any Charger scoring opportunity as the game went into overtime. In the extra period, Gwyn Vincent (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central) scored on a breakaway to give the Spartans the comeback victory.
