Baseball Undone by Owls in Seventh Inning Surge

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell 13-3 in seven innings to Keene State in Wednesday's Little East Conference matchup.

How it Happened:
The Owls opened up the scoring at the top of the first inning, scoring before the runner at first was picked off in a back-and-forth battle between the Spartan's fielders, taking a 1-0 lead. Justin Strozyk tied the game at one at bottom of the fourth with a massive home run to the softball field for his fourth of the year. At the top of the fifth inning, Keene scored two runs off a single up the middle, before adding two more from a double before the half inning came to a close (5-1).

The Spartans put their final two runs of the game on the board at the bottom of the fifth as Jack Humbach singled through the left side to bring in Joe Castellano, while Strozyk followed with a single through the left side to bring in Alex McClelland as Castleton trailed by two (5-3). The Owls added two runs off a home run at the top of the sixth (7-3), before finishing the top of the seventh with four runs to take a 13-3 lead, leaving Castleton with three outs left to overcome the 10-run rule. The Spartans went down in order to end the seventh as Keene secured the 13-3 win.

Top Performers:
  • Strozyk led the team with two hits and two RBIs.
  • Trey LaVigne led the pitchers with three strikeouts through 2.2 innings.
What's Next
The squad is on the road Saturday, April 11, for an LEC doubleheader at UMass Boston. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m. with game two to follow.
