Baseball's Late Rally Not Enough Against Panthers

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team's late push was not enough against Plymouth State on Tuesday for the first Little East Conference game of the week, as the Spartans fell 9-8.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 9-8 Plymouth State
  • Location: Castleton, Vermont – Spartan Baseball Field
  • Records: 3-14 (2-6 LEC) Plymouth | 7-21 (2-6 LEC) Castleton
How it Happened:
Plymouth took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, with a two-run home run, leaving the Spartans to respond, but they were unsuccessful as they stranded one runner at the bottom of the second. The Panthers enhanced their lead at the top of the third with three more runs as the Spartans left one runner on at the bottom of the third, looking to cut the lead (5-0).

Justin Strozyk put the Spartans on the board first with a big single out to center field to bring home Trey LaVigne, cutting the lead to four (5-1). Plymouth State added on another run at the top of the sixth, taking a 6-1 lead. Castleton answered back in the bottom of the inning as Strozyk grounded out with bases loaded, allowing Tommie Shaw to score (6-2).

The eighth inning saw runs from both sides as the Panthers added on their final three runs at the top of the inning, while the Spartans exploded at the bottom. Strozyk started off the inning with a single down the left field line following LaVigne's double to bring LaVigne in (9-3). Joe Castellano launched a triple out to right field, just shy of the fence, to bring home Carter Dickinson and Strozyk, cutting the lead to four (9-5). On the following at-bat, Castellano scored on a passed ball as the lead was now three (9-6).

The Spartans put down the Panthers at the top of the ninth as they had one more opportunity to tie the game or take the lead. A walk and a single to start the inning put two runners on as Strozyk sent a sacrifice fly out to left field to bring in the seventh run for the Spartans, as the lead was cut to two. A double by Dickinson put two runners in scoring position as Castellano stepped up, and also sent a sacrifice fly out to left field to bring in Jack Humbach (9-8). The final at-bat resulted in a strikeout as the Panthers took the 9-8 win.
