Eight Goal Run Helps Spartans Pull Off Comeback Victory

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's lacrosse team rebounded from a first-quarter deficit to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 11-6, on Saturday morning.

How It Happened
Things got off to a tough start for the Spartans as the visitors put up four goals, with the first three coming from Maddy Allen.

Castleton finally answered at 11:50 in the second quarter as Megan Culp scored her 100th career goal. Culp's tally kicked off an eight-goal run that stretched well into the third quarter, giving the Spartans an 8-4 lead with 5:13 remaining in the stanza.

Renny Cota netted three goals, while Culp and Phoebe Loomis contributed two apiece. Taylor Gleeson added one of her own.

The Corsairs responded at 4:42, but Lanza Bellomo added another for Castleton before the end of the quarter, sending the Spartans into the final frame with a 9-5 advantage.

Loomis accounted for the Spartans' final two tallies, both on the man-up, while UMass Dartmouth added one more for the 11-6 final.

Inside the Numbers
• Loomis led the team with four goals, while Cota (3) and Culp (2) followed.
• Taylor Talmadge recorded two points on a pair of assists, while Bellomo also added a helper in the victory.
Courtney Magee led the defense with five caused turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls.
• Goalkeeper Gracie Hurlbut earned her second win of the season, turning away seven shots.

What's Next
The Spartans will have a quick turnaround as they are set to host Thomas College tomorrow, Sunday, April 11, in a non-conference matchup scheduled for 1 p.m.
