GORHAM, Maine – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell in Wednesday's first-round matchup to the host team, Southern Maine, 10-6, as the Little East Tournament got underway. The tournament is double elimination style, which pushes the Spartans to game four of the tournament tomorrow.
The Basics:
- Final Score: 10-6 Southern Maine
- Location: Gorham, Maine – Ed Flaherty Field
- Records: 27-10 Southern Maine | 13-28 Castleton
How it Happened:
The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead at the bottom of the first inning, before adding on another four runs at the bottom of the second, taking an 8-0 lead before Castleton answered back. With the bases loaded at the top of the third,
Trey LaVigne was walked to bring in one run, while
Sebastian Vazquez reached first on an error on the next at-bat to allow
Tommie Shaw to score (8-2).
Tripp Shytle was then hit by a pitch to bring in
Justin Strozyk as the lead was cut to five (8-3).
Southern Maine added on two more runs at the bottom of the third on a two-run home run as they would score their eventual final runs of the game (10-3). As the inning flipped to the top of the fourth, with one runner on, Strozyk doubled to right center field, allowing Shaw to cross home as Castleton now trailed 10-4. The Spartans put the Huskies down in order at the bottom of the fourth, before stranding one runner of their own at the top of the fifth. Castleton's defense yet again retired the side in three batters at the bottom of the fifth, putting the Spartans up to bat.
With the bases loaded following two singles and LaVigne being hit by a pitch,
Jack Humbach entered the game to pinch hit, launching a single to left field to bring in
Carter Dickinson and Shaw as Castleton was able to cut the deficit to four before the end of the sixth (10-6). Castleton turned a double play at the bottom of the sixth to retire the Huskies before more runs could be added to the board, but the Spartans were unable to find more runs of their own as Southern Maine took game one of the tournament 10-6.
