MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team opened Little East Conference play with a 6-0 loss to Eastern Connecticut on Sunday. The game was called after six innings due to rain, with game two of the scheduled doubleheader being postponed.

How it Happened:
Both teams escaped the first inning unscathed as the Spartans opened the top of the second with back-to-back singles, putting two runners on.
Jack Humbach advanced to second, while
Tommie Shaw was caught stealing third, leaving one runner on as the next batter struck out, and the final batter of the half inning flew out to left field.
East Conn put the first run on the board at the bottom of the fourth with a single, and added to the lead at the top of the fifth, with two singles and a home run to take a 6-0 lead. Castleton closed out the soon-to-be-called game at the top of the sixth with two runners left on base.
Alex McClelland was walked, which
Justin Strozyk followed up with a double down the left field line to put runners in scoring position for Castleton. The final batter of the game struck out, resulting in the Warriors taking the 6-0 win in the shortened game.
Top Performers:
- Strozyk, Shaw, and Humbach put up one run each.
- Luke Russell pitched all six innings, notching two strikeouts.
