SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team dropped Tuesday's non-conference contest against the Gators of Russell Sage 13-7.

How it Happened:
The Gators opened up the bottom of the first inning with a home run to take a 1-0 lead as the Spartans worked to hit back. Castleton left two runners on at the top of the second, before Russell Sage shot back with two more runs scored at the bottom of the inning for a 3-0 lead.
Castleton put up one run at the top of the third as
Alex McClelland grounded into a double play, allowing
Trey LaVigne to cut the lead to two (3-1). The Gators continued to add on runs, with three in the bottom half of the third.
The Spartans exploded at the top of the fourth, scoring four runs off three hits (6-1). A single to center field by LaVigne loaded the bases as
Mikey Raby Jr. stepped up to hit a single, allowing
Jack Humbach to cross home for Castleton's second run (6-2). On the next at-bat,
Carter Dickinson scored, followed by LaVigne and Raby two batters later as the score stood at 6-5. Russell Sage tacked on three more runs at the bottom of the fourth, taking a 9-5 lead.
The Gators added one more run in the bottom of the fifth as they led by five (10-5), while the Spartans responded back at the top of the seventh. Dickinson was walked, allowing Humbach to advance to second, as
Tommie Shaw scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to four (10-6). Two batters later, Humbach scored on a fielder's choice, cutting the deficit to 10-7. The Gators scored three more runs during the bottom half of the seventh for the final runs of the game as they took the 13-7 win.
Top Performers:
- Raby led Castleton with three hits, while he and McClelland each had two RBIs.
- LaVigne, Kevin Hewlett, and Carter Chapman recorded one strikeout each.
What's Next
The Spartans will play game two of Sunday's postponed doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut tomorrow (March 25). First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and the game will be played up the road at Middlebury College.
