WORCESTER, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team fell in a mid-week non-conference road contest against the Cougars of Clark University, 12-4.

How it Happened:
Castleton opened the scoring Thursday afternoon with one runner on as
Trey LaVigne reached first on a fielding error, and
Tommie Shaw was able to cross home plate as Castleton took a 1-0 lead. At the bottom of the first, the Spartans retired the Cougars in order and did the same at the bottom of the second. Clark struck at the bottom of the third with two runs scored on back-to-back batters as they took a 4-1 lead.
Castleton found success at the plate at the top of the sixth, as
Justin Strozyk sent a single through the right side with two runners on, bringing in
Jack Humbach as the lead was cut to two (4-2).
Joe Castellano added to the Spartans' lead with a double through the left side to bring
Tripp Shytle in, while
Lucas Sinacola was thrown out at home for the tying run as Castleton trailed by one (4-3).
The Cougars jumped out to a 6-3 lead at the bottom of the sixth, before Castleton went down in order at the top of the seventh. Clark exploded for six runs at the bottom of the seventh as the lead was now 12-3 before the Spartans had the chance to put more runs on the board.
Christian Giannone notched a sacrifice fly out to right field at the top of the eighth, allowing Humbach to score for the fourth and final run of the game for the Spartans. Castleton's defense shut down Clark at the bottom of the eighth, with one more chance to put more runs on the board, but were unsuccessful as the Cougars took the 12-4 win.
Top Performers:
- Strozyk led the Spartans with three hits, adding one RBI.
- Humbach and Shytle notched two hits each.
- Kyle Wilson and Carter Chapman threw one strikeout each.

The Spartans open Little East Conference play on Sunday, March 22, with a doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
