NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Vermont State University Castleton softball team fell 1-0 to Penn State Abington on Day 2 of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.

How it Happened:
Castleton put a runner on in the opening inning as
Samera Rideout singled to left field, but the Spartans were unable to bring the run in and the game remained scoreless through the first two innings. Penn State Abington broke through in the bottom of the third after a leadoff walk and bunt moved the runner into scoring position. The runner later stole third before a sacrifice fly brought home the game's only run, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that
Alex Brouillette recorded a double and advanced to third, giving the Spartans a chance to shift momentum, but they were unable to bring her home. In the sixth, Rideout singled through the left side, and Brouillette followed with her second double of the game to put two runners in scoring position, but Castleton was unable to capitalize.
The Spartans held Penn State Abington in check defensively the rest of the way, but the Lions maintained the one-run lead to close out the game, 1-0.
