Baseball Closes Out RussMatt With Win Over Engineers

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team closed out its appearance at the RussMatt Invitational with a 6-3 win over MIT on Sunday morning. The team leaves Florida with a 4-4 record over the weeklong trip.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
The Spartans struck first at the top of the second inning, as Logan Sinacola scored on a wild pitch after stealing third right before for a 1-0 Castleton lead. The team added on at the top of the third as Carter Dickinson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Tommie Shaw to cross home plate for a 2-0 lead.

The Engineers struck in the bottom of the third inning, scoring off a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one (2-1). Castleton lengthened the lead back to two at the top of the fifth as Shaw stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. MIT cut the lead to one yet again in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on an error (3-2).

At the top of the sixth, the Spartans scored another run off a wild pitch as Dickinson crossed the plate, putting Castleton up 4-2. The Engineers had an answer at the bottom of the seventh as they cut the lead yet again to one (4-3). The final runs of the game came at the top of the eighth as Jack Humbach singled through the left side, allowing Logan Sinacola to score, followed by Joe Castellano sending a double to left field, bringing Mikey Raby Jr. in as the Spartans secured the 6-3 win.

Top Performers:
  • Humbach and Castellano led the team with one hit each, while the pair and Dickinson each had one RBI.
  • Patrick Hallett threw for six innings, striking out a season-high eight batters.
What's Next
The team heads back north after today's contest and is set to face Emerson on Thursday, March 5, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
