ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team dropped a tough non-conference neutral site matchup against Plattsburgh State on Saturday, falling 24-4.

How it Happened:
The Cardinals opened the first inning with a 3-0 lead off a triple and a single before Castleton answered at the bottom of the second as
Joe Castellano was walked with bases loaded to bring
Turner Clews in. On the next at-bat,
Tommie Shaw set a sacrifice flyout to the center fielder, allowing
Trey LaVigne to score as Castleton cut the lead to one (3-2).
Mikey Raby Jr. scored with
Justin Strozyk up to bat on a passed ball, tying the game at three after two innings.
Plattsburgh extended its lead in the next two innings, scoring once in the third, and tacking on four runs at the top of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead as the Spartans went down in order to end the fourth inning. The Cardinals added six runs at the top of the fifth to take a 14-3 lead, while the Spartans left one on base at the end of the inning as they worked to add more runs.
Carter Chapman went to work on the mound in the sixth, striking out the first batter he faced in the inning, and the last, but Plattsburgh still added one more run on the board (15-3). At the turn of the seventh inning, the Cardinals led 17-3 as Castleton left one runner on base again.
At the top of the eighth, Plattsburg further extended its lead, scoring four runs (21-3). The Spartans picked up the tempo at the turn of the inning. Five walks in a row, and a stolen base, led to bases loaded for Raby, allowing
Josh Misiaszek to cross the plate. The final batter of the inning struck out, stranding three runners as the deficit sat at 17 (21-4).
The ninth inning saw three more runs from the Cardinals, while
Christian Giannone took advantage of an error to reach first and then advanced to second. Two batters later,
Tripp Shytle was walked with one out and two runners on.
Lucas Sinacola was walked two at-bats later to load the bases for Clews, who flew out to left field to end the game as Plattsburgh took the 24-4 win.
Top Performers:
- Raby led the team with two hits, adding one RBI.
- Carter Dickinson and LaVigne added two hits.
- Shaw and Castellano each had one RBI.
