How It Happened
UMass Boston wasted no time setting the tone, forcing Castleton goaltender
Kara Boassaly to make seven saves while her team contributed five blocked shots in the opening 10 minutes of play. Momentum began to swing in the final minutes of the first period as the Spartans fired 12 shots on goal over a five-minute stretch, though the Beacons' netminder stood firm.
After nearly 25 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Beacons broke through to take a 1-0 lead. Neither side generated much offense over the next several minutes, but UMass Boston regained control late in the period, scoring twice more to extend its lead. Two additional goals before the end of the middle stanza gave the hosts a 4-0 advantage.
Castleton made a change in net to start the third period, with
Gianna McCusker relieving Boassaly. The Beacons continued their pressure, registering five shots in the first three minutes, with the final attempt finding the back of the net to make it 5-0.
At 6:49, the Spartans earned a two-minute power play following a cross-checking penalty.
Morgan Arscott capitalized, breaking up the shutout with a power-play goal to make it 5-1. The tally, scored with five seconds remaining on the advantage, was assisted by
Amanda Vaughn and
Mikayla Brightman.
Castleton closed out the contest with a strong defensive effort, as McCusker made five additional saves, including work on a late penalty kill, to seal the 5-1 final.
