Spartans Earn Point in OT Loss at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's ice hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision at UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

A night-and-day difference from Friday's 5-1 loss to UMass Boston, Castleton controlled play throughout regulation, outshooting the Beacons 28-19. The Spartans also held the advantage at the faceoff dot, winning 29 of 47 draws.

UMass Boston's defense kept the contest scoreless by blocking 18 shots, while its netminder turned aside all 28 shots she faced. It took a full 60 minutes and overtime to decide a winner.

The Beacons won the opening faceoff of overtime and maintained possession before capitalizing 45 seconds into the extra frame to secure the 1-0 victory. Castleton earned one point in the standings by forcing overtime.

Gianna McCusker made 18 saves in the loss. Mikayla Brightman led the Spartans with five shots and 11 faceoff wins.
 

Up Next

Castleton remains on the road to close out the regular season with a two-game series at Keene State on February 13 and 14. Game one is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
