Baseball Takes Down Bloodhounds in Seven

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team grabbed its second seven-inning win over John Jay in as many days, taking down the Bloodhounds 12-2 as Patrick Hallett recorded six strikeouts through six innings.

How it Happened:
Castleton made the first move in the bottom of the second as Alex McClelland stepped up with one runner on. The rookie sent a single into play, allowing Trey LaVigne to score while he advanced to second for a 1-0 Spartan lead. LaVigne lengthened the Spartans' lead in the third inning, with a double to left center bringing in two runs, while McClelland followed up with a triple to put Castleton up 5-0.

The Bloodhounds' two runs of the game came at the top of the fifth inning, off a triple and a groundout, as Castleton closed out the half inning with a double play, leading 5-2. The Spartans tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth off a triple from Tommie Shaw, allowing McClelland to cross home plate for a 6-2 lead.

Castleton posted a six-run inning in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game early. Sebastian Vazquez drew in one run off a double, while LaVigne pulled in one off a single to right center field for an 8-2 lead. Joe Castellano scored on a balk on the next at bat, while LaVigne did the same two batters later for a 10-2 lead. Justin Strozyk singled two batters later, allowing McClelland to come in for another Spartan run, while Josh Misiaszek reached on a fielder's choice that drew in Raby for Castleton's 12th and final run of the game.

Top Performers:
  • Hallett recorded a season-high six strikeouts for his first win of the season.
  • LaVigne and McClelland led the team with three hits each, combining for five RBIs.

The team takes tomorrow off and returns to action in Winter Haven, Florida, on Friday, February 27, as they face St. John Fisher at 12 p.m.
