Deshler Collects First Career Win as Head Coach in Victory Over Beavers

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Vermont State University Castleton baseball team continued its Florida trip on Saturday, taking down The City College of New York 15-12 in 10 innings. The team's win marked head coach Tony Deshler's first career head coaching win in his first year with the Spartans.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 15-12 (10 Inn.) Castleton
  • Location: Davenport, Florida – Northeast Regional Park
  • Records: 1-1 Castleton | 0-4 CCNY
How it Happened:
In the second at-bat of the game, Justin Strozyk sent his second home run of the season out of the park as he put Castleton up 1-0. Following a double and a hit by pitch, Turner Clews sent a double out to left field, bringing Tripp Shytle across home for a 2-0 lead at the turn of the inning.

The Beavers found their way on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-2 lead over the Spartans. Answering back in the top of the third, a balk by the pitcher allowed Strozyk to tie the game, which allowed the next at bat to load the bases. Clews sent a sacrifice fly out to center field, bringing in Carter Dickinson for a 4-3 Castleton lead.

In the fourth inning, the Spartans extended their lead to 8-3 with bases loaded on both plays. CCNY scored twice in the bottom of the inning, trailing 8-5, but the Spartans answered back in the fifth as Shytle allowed Joe Castellano to score. Logan Sinacola notched his first career home run in the top of the sixth, putting Castleton up 12-5.

The Beavers answered with a big half inning, tying the game at 12. The two teams kept up with one another on the defensive end, forcing extra innings following the ninth. Alex McClelland notched his second career hit with a single to center field before advancing on the throw, allowing the leading run to cross home for a 13-12 Castleton lead. Tommie Shaw solidified the lead with a double to left field as two runs came in and the Spartans led 15-12. Castleton put away the Beavers to end the 10th inning and get their first win of the season.
