PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's lacrosse team opened the 2026 season with a 14-11 road victory over the University of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins under the lights on Friday evening.

How It Happened
Jamison Couture won the opening faceoff of the season for the Spartans, sending Castleton into the offensive zone early. It took just 47 seconds for
Carter Frankenhoff to score his first goal of the season, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
With 10 minutes remaining in the opening stanza,
Liam Evarts doubled the advantage with a goal assisted by
Mitch Chaves. Frankenhoff added two more tallies before the end of the quarter, pushing the Castleton lead to 4-0.
UMSV responded with two goals in a 1:30 span to cut the deficit in half, as Castleton led 4-2 after 20 minutes of play. The Spartans answered with another three-goal run, highlighted by two goals from Frankenhoff and one from Evarts, with
Preston Kozlowski picking up an assist. The Dolphins found the net with 1:12 remaining in the half to trail 7-3 at the break.
The Dolphins came out strong in the second half, scoring three goals to open the third quarter and pulling within one, 7-6. The teams then traded goals, with Castleton carrying an 8-7 lead into the final quarter.
UMSV scored early in the fourth to knot the game for the first time at 8-8, but
Taysean Metz answered just 42 seconds later with an unassisted goal to put Castleton back in front.
The Dolphins struck twice in the eighth minute to take a 10-9 lead, but Frankenhoff responded with his sixth goal of the night to tie the game once again at 10-10, igniting a decisive three-goal run. Frankenhoff and
Jason Samek scored to give the Spartans a 12-10 edge with just over four minutes remaining.
UMSV netted its final goal at the 3:30 mark, but Evarts and
Matt Gregoire each found the back of the net down the stretch to seal the 14-11 victory.
By the Numbers
- Frankenhoff posted a career-high seven goals in the win, tying for third-best goals per game in all of Division III (7.0). He also added three ground balls and one caused turnover.
- Evarts finished with four goals, while three others chipped in one apiece.
- Chaves, Kozlowski, and Jordan Damske each recorded an assist.
- Asa Forbes led the ground-ball battle with four, while also causing a team-best four turnovers.
- Finn Maniaci made 11 saves in his first start of the season to secure the victory.
