Women's Basketball Topped by Beacons

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team battled with the Beacons of UMass Boston in another Little East Conference contest Wednesday night, falling 74-66.

How it Happened:
Arianna Coombs scored the first basket of the game with a layup from Stasia Epler before the Beacons tied the game at two a minute later. UMass Boston then jumped out to a 10-7 lead with five minutes to play in the opening frame. Emily Adams drained a layup from Schuylar Nolan with three minutes to go as the Spartans were down two (13-11). As the first quarter ended, the Beacons took a 21-13 lead with one final layup before the horn.

Coombs drained the first basket of the second quarter for the Spartans four minutes in as Nolan dished out her second assist of the game (25-15) while Castleton worked to battle back from a 4-0 run by UMass Boston in the opening three and a half minutes of the quarter. The Spartans finished the half on a 13-10 run as Adams notched the final basket of the half, and her 19th point from Maggie McKearin's fifth assist of the night (35-28).

The Beacons jumped out to a 10-point lead with six minutes to go in the third frame, as the Spartans worked to counter the lead with two-pointers and free throws before Isabella Coombs cut the lead to six with three minutes to go (52-46). Epler drained a three with 48 seconds left as Castleton was down 58-50 with one quarter remaining.

Epler opened the fourth quarter with another three-pointer as the lead was now five (58-53), but the Beacons countered with a 9-2 run before A. Coombs notched an and one, followed by a jump shot by McKearin as the Beacons led 67-60. UMass Boston was up 10 with 45 seconds remaining in the game (74-64). McKearin knocked down two final free throws, but it was not enough as the Spartans fell 74-66.

By the Numbers:
  • Adams led the Spartans with 25 points, while Epler added 16 of her own.
  • McKearin and A. Coombs led with seven rebounds each, combining for 21 points, while McKearin dished out a career-high eight assists.
  • The team combined for a season-high 24 assists in the contest.

The squad will celebrate the team's three seniors on Saturday, February 14, as they host Eastern Connecticut for another LEC matchup, set for 1 p.m.
