Women's Basketball Takes Down Warriors on Senior Day

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team notched its second Little East Conference win of the season on senior day, 73-62 over Eastern Connecticut. Arianna Coombs and Maggie McKearin recorded double-doubles in the contest.

McKearin, Emily Adams, and Stasia Epler were honored prior to the contest for all of the dedication and hard work they have shown to the program over their time at Castleton, with all three writing their name's in the women's basketball record book before they depart.

How it Happened:
The Spartans battled with the Warriors throughout the first quarter, despite trailing by as many as 10 points with six minutes to play. Adams brought Castleton within three with one and a half minutes to go (22-19), but the Warriors ended the first frame with a layup to lead 26-21.

A layup by A. Coombs with five minutes to play in the second quarter brought Castleton within one (30-29) before the Warriors knocked down two free throws. A. Coombs answered back with a jump shot (32-31) before East Conn pulled away again. A. Coombs would not back down, knocking down the final bucket of the half with a layup as the Spartans trailed 39-38 at halftime.

McKearin opened the second half with a layup to give Castleton the lead (40-39), and the team never looked back. A jumper from Adams with three minutes to go in the third frame put the Spartans up eight (51-43), while East Conn fought back within three (55-52) before the buzzer sounded for the quarter.

Schuylar Nolan notched an and-one in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, giving the Spartans a 60-52 lead as time began to wind down. Nolan then gave Castleton its largest lead of the day with four minutes remaining in the game with a jump shot (66-53), while the senior trio finished the final four minutes with six of Castleton's final seven points as they left Glenbrook Gym for the final time with a 73-62 Little East Conference win.

By the Numbers:
  • Adams led the team with 22 points and five rebounds.
  • A. Coombs notched her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and a team-high three steals.
  • McKearin recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points, a team-high 11 rebounds, and four assists.
What's Next
The team is on the road on Wednesday, February 18, for another LEC matchup against the Panthers of Plymouth State, set for 5 p.m.
