Berthiaume Records Career-High 11 Saves as Castleton Falls to Skidmore

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team dropped a nonconference matchup Tuesday night against Skidmore, falling 2-0.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 2-0 Skidmore
  • Location: Castleton, Vt.  | Dave Wolk Stadium
  • Records: 4-4-3 Skidmore | 2-7-2 VTSU Castleton

How it Happened:
Skidmore came out with pressure early, testing Xander Berthiaume with several shots before breaking through in the 14th minute. A cross from outside the box found its way into the area, and after a couple of touches from the Thoroughbreds, they moved the ball past Berthiaume to take a 1-0 lead.

Castleton answered with a few opportunities of its own, with Preston Maryanski and Liam Cramer each putting a shot on goal. Cramer's chance came following a Castleton corner kick, but the Spartans were unable to find the equalizer. Following a Skidmore foul, Charlie Bell added another opportunity for Castleton, sending his shot just over the net.

The Thoroughbreds continued to put pressure on Berthiaume early in the second half, but Berthiaume continued to make saves to keep the deficit to one. Maryanski nearly pulled Castleton even in the 61st minute when he sent a shot toward the top of the net, forcing the Skidmore keeper to stretch to make the save and keep the ball out.

The chance gave Castleton momentum, and the Spartans quickly earned a corner before Cramer put another shot on goal that was narrowly saved. Maryanski followed with another opportunity, but his shot sailed just high of the crossbar. After a Castleton deflection, Skidmore was able to add an insurance goal to extend its lead to 2-0, which proved to be the final score.

By the Numbers:
  • Skidmore held a 22-11 advantage in shots, including a 13-5 edge in the first half. They held a narrower 9-6 advantage after halftime.
  • Maryanski led the Spartans with three shots, while Cramer and Nate Lurie each recorded two.
  • Berthiaume made a season-high and career-high 11 saves.
