CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Vermont State University Castleton women's tennis team earned its first Little East Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, edging West Conn, 4-3.
The Spartans swept all three doubles this afternoon. At the No. 1 spot,
Olivia Rutkowski and
Andrea Rodriguez earned a 6-3 win, while
Grace Pluff and
Maggie McKearin secured a 7-5 victory at No. 2.
Halle Hipple and
Emma Johnson completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Rodriguez earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2, and McKearin added a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Rutkowski fell at No. 1, 4-6, 3-6, while Pluff dropped her No. 3 match, 2-6, 1-6. Johnson also fell at No. 6, 2-6, 1-6.
With the match tied at 3-3, Hipple took the court at No. 5 singles with the team win on the line. Hipple won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second, 0-6. She battled back in the deciding set, earning a 7-5 victory to clinch the 4-3 win for the Spartans.
The Spartans continue their season on Tuesday, Oct. 7, hosting Little East Conference opponent UMass Boston at 4 p.m.
