CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Vermont State University Castleton women's tennis team welcomed UMass Boston for a midweek Little East Conference matchup Wednesday afternoon for its Breast Cancer Awareness game, as the Spartans fell 7-0.
In doubles play,
Olivia Rutkowski and
Maggie McKearin fell 6-2 at the top spot, while
Grace Pluff and
Eva Young dropped their match 6-1 at No. 2.
Halle Hipple and
Emma Johnson battled at No. 3, falling 6-4 in the final doubles match of the day.
Playing without their regular No. 1 and No. 3 players, the Spartans still extended points throughout singles play, with McKearin putting together the closest match of the day at No. 3. McKearin dropped the first set 7-5 before responding with a 6-3 second-set victory. The match went to a third-set tiebreaker, where McKearin ultimately fell 10-7. At No. 1, Rutkowski fell 6-2, 6-1, while Pluff dropped her No. 2 match 6-1, 6-3. Hipple fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Johnson dropped her No. 5 match 6-0, 6-1, and
Mazie Collins fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Spartans return to action Saturday, October 10, when they travel to Southern Maine for a Little East Conference matchup, with the first serve set for 1 p.m.
