Castleton Goes Toe-to-Toe With UMass Dartmouth in LEC Play

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with UMass Dartmouth throughout Friday afternoon, but the Corsairs scored three unanswered goals in the second half to pull away from the Spartans in a 3-0 setback.

The Basics:
  • Final Score: 3-0 UMass Dartmouth
  • Location: North Dartmouth, Mass.  | Cressy Field
  • Records: 2-5-2 (1-2-1 LEC) UMass Dartmouth | 2-7 (0-4 LEC) VTSU Castleton

How it Happened:
Castleton's defense held strong early, keeping UMass Dartmouth from finding a way through the back line while the Spartans created several chances of their own. Caitlin Flaherty had an early look that went just wide, while Maya Coviello nearly found the net in the 13th minute with a shot that sailed just right of the goal.

After an even start, UMass Dartmouth began to control possession and put more pressure on the Spartans. Grace Kallio continued to keep the Corsairs scoreless, and Chloe Green created a pair of opportunities for Castleton late in the half. Green made a run up the field before being stopped by a UMass Dartmouth defender, then tested the Corsairs' goalkeeper from outside the box shortly afterward. The keeper made the save, sending the game into halftime scoreless.

The Corsairs broke through just two minutes into the second half, finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Castleton nearly answered in the 49th minute when a free kick following a UMass Dartmouth foul struck the crossbar.

UMass Dartmouth doubled its advantage shortly after, when an initial shot went wide and appeared to be heading out of bounds before a Corsairs player sneaked in to keep the play alive and tap the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead. Flaherty continued to look for an answer for the Spartans, putting another shot on goal just outside the box, but the Corsairs' goalkeeper made the save.

With about 10 minutes remaining, UMass Dartmouth earned a penalty kick and converted to add its third goal of the afternoon and secure the 3-0 final.
