CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team battled Westfield State Wednesday evening, but the Owls pulled away in the second half to hand the Spartans a 6-2 loss in nonconference action.

How it Happened:
The Spartans came out battling in the opening minutes, keeping pace with Westfield State while looking for an early opportunity. Castleton found it first when
Makenna Price fired a shot that the Owls' keeper initially saved but could not hold onto.
Allison Galante was there to scoop up the rebound, tapping it into the net to give the Spartans the early lead.
Westfield State answered in the 33
rd minute after a Castleton foul put the Owls in good scoring position, tying the game at 1-1. The Owls then found the go-ahead goal late in the half following a corner kick to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
Westfield State continued to pressure the Spartans in the second half, capitalizing on several Castleton fouls to create scoring opportunities and extend its lead.
Castleton answered in the 68
th minute when Price put pressure on the Westfield State defense, forcing a defender's attempted deflection into the net.
After another Owls' foul put Castleton in scoring position,
Gwen Bridges stepped up to take the free kick, but the Westfield goalkeeper made the quick save. The Owls added two more goals late in the half to pull away and secure the 6-2 victory.
By the Numbers:
- Galante led the Spartans with four shots, putting three on goal, while Chloe Green added two shots.
- Grace Kallio played all 90 minutes and made a career and season-high eight saves in goal.
