KEENE, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team faced a tough Keene State squad Tuesday evening but came up short 74-66 in the Little East Conference contest.
Isabelle Cole scored a career-high 18 points, and
Arianna Coombs notched her double-double of the season.

How it Happened:
The Spartans found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-0 scoring run before
Emily Adams lay in the first of three layups Castleton strung together to pull within three (9-6). A free throw from
Arianna Coombs and a three-pointer from Cole gave Castleton a 10-9 lead with two and a half minutes to go in the first frame. Cole then put the Spartans ahead by two (13-11) before the Owls jumped ahead 17-15 to end the quarter.
The Owls came out hot in the second quarter, going up by 14 with four and a half minutes to go (35-21). Adams and Cole combined for six points in the final three minutes of the half, as Castleton was down 40-29 heading into halftime.
The Spartans again found themselves down by 14 in the third quarter (48-34), but worked to chip the lead down to six (50-44) as the third frame came to a close, but not before Cole knocked down a crucial three-pointer with three minutes to go and Castleton started on an 8-2 run to end the quarter.
Castleton was narrowly outscored 24-22 in the fourth quarter, after outscoring the Owls in the quarter prior. Cole's fifth three of the night brought the Spartans within three (50-47) in the opening minute of the final frame, but the Owls went on an 8-0 run before Adams ended it with a jump shot with seven minutes to go (58-49). Cole's final three-pointer of the night came with one and a half minutes to play, as Castleton was down 67-59. The two teams traded buckets and free throws back-and-forth, with the final free throws going in favor of Keene, resulting in the 74-66 win.

- Arianna Coombs notched her fifth double-double of the season, with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
- Adams contributed 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

The Spartans are back in Glenbrook Gym on Saturday, January 31, for another LEC matchup with the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. with the men's game to follow.
