Women's Basketball Falls in Hard-Fought Battle With Huskies

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's basketball team dropped a Little East Conference matchup to a tough Southern Maine squad, 84-63, with Emily Adams notching her second double-double in as many games.

How it Happened:
Southern Maine started strong in the first quarter, but Schuylar Nolan hit a three two minutes in, putting the Spartans up 5-4. The Huskies answered with six straight points before Arianna Coombs' free throw cut the lead to four (10-6). Southern Maine then scored 14 unanswered points over three minutes until Adams made a free throw with just over a minute left (24-7). Isabelle Cole found Maggie McKearin for a three with 19 seconds left, giving the Spartans 10. The Huskies added a layup with two seconds left, leading 30-10 after one quarter.

Both teams played strong defense in the second quarter, each scoring 18 points. Stasia Epler opened the quarter with a three (30-13). Castleton gained some momentum late, but Southern Maine scored 12 of their 18 points in the paint. Adams cut the Huskies' lead with two free throws and a layup, but the Spartans trailed 48-28 at halftime.

Castleton had its work cut out for them as the third quarter began, with Cole draining a three-pointer around the five-minute mark, again cutting the lead to 20 (57-37), but the Huskies pushed it on the offensive end, taking a 71-41 lead as the third frame ended.

The Spartans outscored Southern Maine in the final frame, 22-13, behind 10 points from McKearin. Nolan opened the quarter with two made free throws to get the Spartans going on the offensive end. Adams drained a layup with four and a half minutes left, cutting the Huskies' lead to 22 (77-55). McKearin's final bucket of the game with one second left brought the Spartans to 63, but it was not enough as the Huskies took the 84-63 win.

  • Adams notched another double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, and one assist.
