How it Happened:
A seven-point difference at the end of the first quarter had the Warriors up 22-15, as
Emily Adams and
Arianna Coombs led the Spartans with four points each. Castleton's first lead of the game came with six minutes to go as Coombs drained a layup, putting the Spartans up 6-5. The Warriors shot back with six straight points before
Isabelle Cole ended the streak with a three-pointer, bringing Castleton within two (13-11). Eastern Connecticut then went on a 9-0 run, bringing them to 22, as
Stasia Epler ended it with a jump shot, and Coombs drained a layup in the final second of frame one, leaving the Spartans down seven (22-15).
As quarter two began, Castleton went on a 7-0 run, tying the score at 22, just two minutes in. Eastern answered with a layup, putting them up two, and further extending the lead with a jump shot to pull out to a 26-22 lead with six minutes to play in the half. Cole gave the Spartans their second lead of the night with a huge three-pointer, putting them up 29-28 with under four minutes to go. The Warriors went on a six-point run, but the Spartans stormed back, with
Schuylar Nolan giving Castleton a one-point lead heading into halftime (36-35).
The Warriors came out hot to start the third frame, scoring eight straight points, before Coombs answered with a layup from Adams, bringing Castleton within three (43-40). Eastern then jumped out to a 58-42 lead at the halfway mark of the quarter, forcing the Spartans to go to work on the offensive end. The defensive efforts by both teams were top-notch through the rest of the quarter, with the teams scoring a combined six points in the final four and a half minutes of the game, leaving Eastern up 60-46 at the end of the third.
The Warriors outscored the Spartans 22-6 in the final frame, with Castleton scoring its first point of the quarter four minutes in off a free throw from Coombs. The Spartans pushed against Eastern's defense but struggled to find baskets. Eastern Connecticut walked away with a 30-point victory, 82-52.
