ALBANY, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey returned to the win column on Tuesday evening, taking down Russell Sage College 5-2 on the road.

How It Happened
After a scoreless first quarter, Castleton was able to make the board first as
Ava LaRoss was able to find that back of the cage just one minute into the second stanza, helped along by
Madison Gile. The Spartans extended their lead to 2-0 just six minutes later when
Jess Smithson scored her first goal of the season off a
Gwyn Vincent corner insert. Tacking on one more score to close out the half was
Brooke Noble, who was assisted by Gile for her second helper of the day to go up 3-0.
Russell Sage finally broke through the Castleton defense to open the third quarter, bringing itself within two scores, 3-1. The Spartans were able to regain their three goal advantage in the 43
rd minute as Genieve Pitts added herself to the scorers column, Castleton led 4-1 heading into the final quarter.
The Gators were looking to make it a game as they recorded their second goal of the contest at 50:33, but the Spartans put all notions of a comeback to rest as
Amber Muniz scored her first-ever goal to make it 5-2 Castleton with seven minutes left on the game clock.
By the Numbers
- A strong day for the Castleton offense, it out shot RSC 27-9.
- In the cage Zoe Martin turned away two shots for her fourth win of the season.
- There were five different goal scorers for the Spartans, LaRoss, Smithson, Noble, Pitts and Muniz, while Gile accumulated two points on two assists.

Castleton will return home on Saturday October 4 as it kicks off its Little East Conference slate with a 4 p.m. matchup with the Wolves of WestConn on the turf at Dave Wolk Stadium.
