Spartans Roll Wolves for First LEC Victory of the Season

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey downed WestConn for its first Little East Conference victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, 5-0.

How It Happened
Castleton took no time at all to let WestConn know it meant business as Jess Smithson scored of an Ava LaRoss penalty corner insert to put the Spartans up 1-0 at 1:24. This would prove to be the eventual game-winner.

Another one score quarter, Gwyn Vincent notched her sixth goal of the season five minutes into the second stanza, helping Castleton to a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Spartans poured it on in the third quarter, scoring three goals in a five minute period. Their first goal came at 1:39 in the stanza as LaRoss scored her first of the game, helped along by Lilyana Case for her first-career point. Less than two minutes later Madison Gile added her name to the scorer's list as she was dished the ball by Vincent off a penalty corner to make it 4-0.

Unstoppable, LaRoss recorded her second goal of the game in the 35th minute, dished the ball by Vincent who she initially fed it to on the penalty corner. The Spartans claimed a commanding 5-0 victory over the Wolves, matching last score.

  • Vincent continues to impress on offense as she had four points on a goal and two helpers.
  • Smithson and Gile each ended the day with two points on one goal. Case with one off an assist.
  • Zoe Martin made four stops in the cage for her first shutout of the season.
  • Castleton out shot WestConn 13-6 and owned an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.

What's Next
The Spartans will hit the road on Tuesday as they travel to Massachusetts to battle with the Golden Bears of Western New England in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
