Women's Soccer Downs Pilgrims

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton women's soccer team blanked New England College Tuesday afternoon with a 5-0 win. Rookie Chloe Green notched her first career hat trick, and Maggie Parker sank her first career goal.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Green wasted no time in getting the Spartans on the board, launching her first goal of the day off a long pass from Emma Kirby in the first minute just outside the box, sailing it over the keeper's head.
  • Becky Hannwacker got in on the scoring in the fifth minute, launching the ball over the keeper from just outside the 20-yard line, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
  • Five minutes later, Green notched her second goal of the day, finding the ball off the head of a defender, and bouncing it off a defender and in.
  • The Pilgrims saw their first shots of the day in the 13th and 16th minutes, with Emma Ezzo saving both, keeping New England College at bay.
  • In the 17th minute, Parker went bar down after beating her defender and shooting over the keeper's head, extending Castleton's lead to four with over 25 minutes remaining in the half.
  • Ezzo finished the first half with three saves, giving way to Julie Cooper in the second, who finished with one save.
  • The final goal of the day came in the 55th minute, as Maggie McKearin crossed the ball past the keeper, finding Green for her third of the day as Castleton ran away with the 5-0 win.

  • Green led the team with three goals and four shots on goal, and Parker scored a goal with two shots on goal.
  • McKearin, Paige Cargill, Maya Coviello, and Emma Patrissi combined for four shots on goal.

The squad continues its homestand on Sunday, September 28, playing host to Colby-Sawyer with kick off set for 1 p.m. The Spartans are hosting their Grass Roots/Youth Day game, where young fans will have the opportunity to receive a mini soccer ball courtesy of Vermont Fusion Soccer, cookies courtesy of Michelle's Cookies, and a chance to meet the team following the game.
