Men's Soccer Stuns Roos

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Vermont State University Castleton men's soccer team dug out a thrilling 2-1 win over SUNY Canton on Sunday as Charlie Bell scored his first career goal.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • The first half saw attempts from both Castleton and Canton, with neither team breaking through the strong defensive lines and goalkeepers, with Joey Raap in goal for the Roos and Alex Roy taking charge for the Spartans.
  • Castleton outshot Canton 7-5 through the first 45 minutes of play, with Roy making two saves.
  • In the 50th minute, as the second half got underway, on the Spartans' first shot of the half, Bell beat his defender to the ball and got out ahead of him, launching his first career goal into the back of the net to give Castleton a 1-0 lead.
  • In the 71st minute, the Roos found a man-open opportunity and were able to capitalize and tie the game up at one apiece.
  • In the 79th minute on a critical call just outside the box on the left side of the field, Matt Spiller took a free kick and curved it beautifully into the top right corner past the keeper, giving Castleton a 2-1 lead.
  • Through a tumultuous final 20 minutes of aggressive play, the Spartans held on for the 2-1 win.
