Three Goal Second Quarter Helps Spartans to Win Over Thoroughbreds

CASTLETON, Vt. – Despite trailing early, the Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team went the distance to take down Skidmore College, 4–3, in the first event of Homecoming Weekend on Friday. Prior to the start of the contest, the team celebrated Grow the Game Night, a special event dedicated to inspiring the next generation of field hockey players.

The Basics
  • Final Score: VTSU Castleton 4, Skidmore College 3
  • Location: Dave Wolk Stadium – Castleton, Vt.
  • Records: Castleton 3–4 | Skidmore 4–3

How It Happened
Despite Castleton registering the first three shots of the contest, the Thoroughbreds scored first, capitalizing on a penalty corner at 2:54 to take an early 1–0 lead. The visitors would not make it out of the first quarter unscathed, as Ava LaRoss was able to knot the game at 1–1. LaRoss's goal was the result of a Peyton Richardson shot batted down by the goalkeeper, which she then cleaned up for her second tally of the season. Skidmore scored once more as time wound down in the opening stanza, leading 2–1 after 15 minutes of play.

Just 62 seconds into the second quarter, Castleton tied it at 2–2, as Brooke Noble notched her first collegiate goal, helped along by Madison Gile. It took less than two minutes for the Spartans to find the back of the cage again—this time it was Richardson with the goal to give Castleton a 3–2 lead. The hosts extended their lead to two goals after LaRoss netted her second of the day midway through the second stanza, making it 4–2.

Things slowed down in the second half, with no scores in the third quarter—though not for lack of effort, as Castleton recorded two blocks and one save during the period.

Goalkeeper Zoe Martin had four crucial saves to start the final quarter, but Skidmore finally broke through in the 52nd minute to cut the deficit to 4–3. The Spartans locked down in the closing minutes, holding the Thoroughbreds to just one shot, and secured their third-straight victory.

By the Numbers
  • LaRoss led the Spartan offense with four points on her two goals.
  • Richardson and Noble each recorded a goal, while Gile earned her first point of the season with an assist.
  • Martin stood tall in goal for Castleton, making eight saves in 60 minutes.
  • The Spartans' defense tallied five blocks in the second half.
