Vincent Hat Trick Powers Field Hockey Road Win

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Vermont State University Castleton field hockey team took down Colby-Sawyer College 3–2 on Wednesday afternoon, powered by the first hat trick of Gwyn Vincent's career.

The Basics
  • Final Score: VTSU Castleton 3, Colby-Sawyer College 2
  • Location: Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field – New London, N.H.
  • Records: Castleton 2–4 | CSC 2–3

How It Happened

Despite six shots by the Spartans to open the contest, it was the hosting Chargers who found the back of the cage first, going up 1–0 with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

The second quarter flipped the script, with CSC generating most of the chances. With 1:02 remaining in the first half, Gwyn Vincent was able to break through for Castleton, making it 1–1 heading into the break.

It took just 26 seconds into the third quarter for Castleton to earn a penalty corner, and only 10 more before Vincent, the inserter, scored her second goal of the day to put her squad up 2–1. The Spartans were awarded a penalty stroke in the 35th minute, taken by Jess Smithson, but her attempt was saved, keeping the score at 2–1. The rest of the quarter was back and forth, but Castleton maintained its one-goal advantage.

The hosts scored early in the final stanza, knotting the game 2–2 with just under 14 minutes remaining in the contest. Less than a minute later, Vincent completed her hat trick to put her team up 3–2. The sophomore's goal was assisted by Peyton Richardson. The Spartan defense held the Chargers shotless through the remainder of the game, securing its second victory of the season.
